It has been unseasonably cold, dark and wet in Seattle where I live this April, surprisingly even colder and wetter than London! Everyday of the last month has been between 10 and 15 degrees colder in Seattle than in London! I highly recommend this movie! Especially now, if you need warming up and cheering up and at least a couple of hours of escape from dreary grey dampness. I watch Enchanted April every spring if I cannot get away! It is a good mini vacation and it also reminds me that this seemingly endless damp overcast is good for my pale complexion! I remind myself that the humidity makes my hair wavy which is actually becoming. And that the sun finally comes out in this movie, as it will here eventually! I can wear them rain or shine! They are good examples of the traditional designs the Liberty company became famous for so I am posting them here to share with other scarf enthusiasts.

In he was apprenticed to a draper, but the apprenticeship was ended after two years with both parties in agreement. Here he gained an appreciation for and knowledge of Oriental ceramics, textiles and other arts. After being the manager of the Oriental Warehouse for over ten years, and seeing no chance for advancement within the company, Liberty decided to open his own business selling Oriental imports.

The original store was on Regent Street, and they sold mainly objects from the East — rugs, fabrics and decorative objects.

Earlier, when he was manager of Farmer and Rogers Oriental Warehouse, he told his artist friends that if only he had a shop of his own he would change the whole look of fashion in dress and decoration. This he was to achieve, for as the architect Richard Norman Shaw wrote to him: You found things, most of them beastly, and you leave them glorious in colour and full of interest.

It is opposed by the fact that it never received official recognition as a university and is not listed as a university in 19th-century reference works; that it does not have a continuous history as an autonomous institution, having been merged into the University of London from to ; that it only received degree awarding powers in ; that it accepted a charter as a college in , giving up its claim to be a university.

It is also opposed by the fact that it did not receive its charter until , after King’s College London. Following an abortive attempt by Henry Brougham to establish “London College” via an Act of Parliament, [ ] UCL was established on 11 February as a joint-stock company — equivalent to a modern limited liability company, although not incorporated— under the name of “University of London”. This gives it the earliest date of foundation of any of the contenders and makes it the first to begin operation.

It was the first broad-curriculum institution providing education in Arts and the higher faculties of Law and Medicine as opposed to the specialist medical, legal, and theological schools and, as such, has a strong claim to be the third oldest university institution in England which may or may not correspond to being the third oldest university. UCL applied for a charter under the name of “University of London” in , which would have granted it university status and the right by implication of granting degrees in Arts, Law and Medicine.

June 20, Paris does it again! The newly opened Berges de Seine. I’ve got a confession to make. I’ve always had an aversion to expats who rave about Paris as if it’s the greatest city in the world. For many people, being posted here is like holding the ultimate trump card. Nothing, it seems, can beat the experience of living in the “City of Light”.

But over time, I’ve started to change my tune. And now, at the risk of sounding like one more overly enthusiastic expat, I’ve got to admit that I understand why everyone is so proud to live here. It’s because when Paris does something, it almost always gets it right.

London is an amazing city to spend time getting into the festive spirit Looking for things to do in London at Christmas? From the famous lights on Regent Street to the dozens of ice skating rinks and markets which pop up across town, London is an amazing city to spend time getting into the festive spirit. One of the most iconic and longstanding Christmas traditions in London is the installation of the 60ft Christmas tree, which takes pride of place in Trafalgar Square each December.

Across the circus in Oxford Street, more than 1, decorations light up the sky each year with , twinkling lights and, never one to stick to tradition, Carnaby Street usually goes for an alternative display, such as giant disco balls or glitter earphones, marking its musical heritage.

They wore Liberty silk head scarves, tweed, riding boots despite not being within 10 miles of a horse , and largely vacant expressions. In , though, their descendants are unrecognisable. Music festivals, brightly-dyed hair, holidays in Ibiza, piercings and a laissez-faire attitude to personal hygiene.

Victoria Beckham, meanwhile, is Not Okay with the arrangement. Like a lot of things in their lives, the Sloane Ravers have mainly inherited their status. At their endless run of summer music festivals, the Ravers can be spotted making peace signs in selfies with the likes of Rita Ora, Alexa Chung and Nick Grimshaw, for instance. But what do they do?

The Slang Dictionary: Etymological, Historical and Andecdotal by John Camden Hotten

According to those proposing a change in terminology, “slave” perpetuates the crime of slavery in language, by reducing its victims to a nonhuman noun instead of, according to Andi Cumbo-Floyd, “carry[ing] them forward as people, not the property that they were”. Other historians prefer “slave” because the term is familiar and shorter, or because it accurately reflects the inhumanity of slavery, with “person” implying a degree of autonomy that slavery does not allow for.
